Music is a huge part of my life. How could it not be? I live in “Music City”, right?! I really think that music provides a soundtrack to our lives. As powerful as sights and smells, hearing a song can ignite a memory from long ago or can give you a mental boost when you’re dragging along. The power of music is undeniable.
Music is also a huge part of my training. 95% of the time, I train on my own, and trust me, the mind can really wonder to some strange places when you’re doing 20-30 hour training weeks! I find music to be a great way to not only zone into a particular workout, but as a way to help motivate and push me along during tougher training periods.
I get asked a lot about what music I listen to during training sessions and especially during events. I think most people might imagine me having massive playlists loaded with pounding, up-beat tunes, but it’s actually quite the opposite. The majority of the music I listen to while training is, in a lot of ways, more of a downtempo variety. I find that it allows me to relax, breathe smoothly, and calms me mentally as I push through a particular session.
Thankfully, with all of the newer options available through music subscription services (i.e. Spotify, Rhapsody) I no longer have to spend massive amounts of money on permanent purchases. I can now easily charge my player up with countless playlists and enough music to last for weeks on end, which is sometimes necessary when you’re running across a desert!
So what am I listening to? Well, it would be impossible to pigeon hole me into one particular taste, so I’ll just share with you the top 20 from my most recent playlist. It’s probably a good representation of my taste: a bit of the old, a bit of the new, a bit of the fast, a bit of the slow. You can also see current updates to my musical tastes over at my personal blog, teamRFO.com. I post a weekly “Video of the Week” there. It’s fun for me to share my tastes with others. Who knows? Maybe I can introduce you to something new that you may enjoy as much as I do! So, here are the goods….
