My First Cycling Race

The 2015 Race season is my first as a cyclist.  I have competed in various sports throughout the years, and the single commonality across all of them is the excitement that inevitable comes with opening day.  There is the eager anticipation to validate all of the training you have put it, the curiosity as to what the experience will be like, and the slight anxiety produced by the voice in the back of your head questioning if you are ready.

My opening day was the Cal Aggie Criterium held on January 31st.  Since getting on a road bike last July I had amassed over 250 hours of training covering just over 4,100 miles on my bike.  I had been hit by a car, ridden in rain and snow, suffered through winter months on a trainer, and altered my schedule completely to accomidate my training.  Needless to say, I was ready to validate that this all had been worth while.

My curiosity was peaked.  I had talked racing and strategy with anyone who had any experience at any available opportunity.  This included teammates on team rides (Thanks Kevin and Colby!), people who have since stopped racing but had years of previous experience, and I even managed to turn the two hour car ride to the event into a crash course in Criterium strategy.  I was ready to experience all of this first hand and have my own race stories to tell.

And yes, I was a little anxious.  I trusted my training and felt like I had strong legs, but what if everyone else did too?  What if the slight confidence I had going into the race was completely misplaced?  Most of all I was afraid that I would not enjoy an experience I had been preparing for for months….

As one would expect, once the race started none of this mattered!  The adrenaline flushed everything and the only thing I focused on was the race, my legs, and the wheel in front of me.  I ended up 16th in a field of 50 and that was okay.  I confirmed that my training prepared me more than enough and from here I can only improve as I gain experience.  I confirmed that I was physically ready and that I need to listen to more strategy advice.  I confirmed that I will be competitive as a cyclist.  But most importantly I confirmed that I love racing, love the sport of cycling, and cannot wait for the next opportunity to get out there and give it a go!

Gobi Race Report: Part 2 – Check-In to Stage 3

As I stated in Part 1, the good people at my local airport misplaced my checked baggage from the outset. With limited communications available to me, it was a struggle to locate and transfer my gear to the event hotel. Following countless emails and with the help of our ground team though, my well-traveled North Face duffle appeared a few short hours before we were to set out. The delayed baggage only meant that I had to wear the same clothes for 6 days, as I carried-on all of my race kit. Obviously, the wise choice!

The now traditional Saturday...

Road Trip

Every year I set new goals for myself, typically relating to athletics. The first year after my accident I was able to hike well over 450 miles. The second year I ran over 500 miles. This year I have upped the goals.

Goal #1. Land a backside double cork 1080, a trick I always wanted to do before my accident. (it's at the end of this video)

Goal #2. Bike over 1,000 miles this summer.

I accomplished my first goal on May 1st at a private shoot at Northstar, California. I couldn't have been more excited! Two days later, my brother,...

Imagine a Life Without Sport

I can’t imagine a life without sport. Honestly. It just doesn't compute… If you’re reading this, I’m betting you’re a sports lover too – so grab a cup of tea and a fig bar (see what I did there?), have a read of the below and just …. mull it over. I’ll give you a minute:

“Imagine if you’d never had the chance to play sports or games growing up. Imagine no football, hockey, basketball, hopscotch or games of tag. Imagine how different your life would have been, and what a different person you might be today.“

And…. you’re back in the room....

Water – The Importance of Staying Hydrated for Athletes

Hydration is arguably the most critical factor not only for good health, but also in the development of athletic pursuits. Drinking water is particularly important for athletes because the nature of their activities lend to using up stores more quickly.  For individuals participating in sports, careful monitoring of water intake to insure they are getting adequate amounts to stay hydrated is imperative.

The body is made up of 70% water and water is considered to be the second most critical factor in which life is dependent upon, the first being oxygen.  Because water makes up a considerable part of the...
