Nature's Bakery

Pay It Forward

Hi. It's Andrew again, Director of Marketing for Nature's Bakery, here with another update for The Goods: Inside Nature's Bakery.  Today, I wanted to share with you, our fans and readers, an experience that I thought was really cool.

This morning I was on my way to watch a friend play a tennis match. It was only about 38 degrees out and I made a quick decision to grab a hot coffee at a local Starbucks.  I went through the drive-thru, ordered my coffee and made my way around to the drive-thru window to ante up payment. As I pulled up, the Starbucks employee greeted me with a smile and she then congratulated me on being the 8th customer in line. At this point, I'm thinking by the way she said that, that maybe I had won a random prize. It turns out that I didn't necessarily win a prize, but something even more random. I was the beneficiary of a random act of kindness that had started 8 cars ahead of me.

As it came to be, just for existing in the right time and moment, I was part of a chain of people in the drive-thru line that chose to pay it forward that morning. As a result of one individuals kind gesture of paying for the persons bill behind them in the Starbucks drive-thru, it created a ripple of kindness, in which I was the 8th person affected in that ripple.

I was caught a off-gaurd when I was told my bill was paid for by the individual in the car ahead me, however, it put a smile on my face and I was immediately touched by the gesture and inspired. And with that, the decision was clear to me that I was going to pay it forward as well. My choice was not based on a feeling of obligation, or the fear of breaking the chain, but because I wanted to keep that ripple of kindness going. I felt honored to participate and special in that I had a choice in whether I could make the decision to keep it paying forward or end the ripple. Whether the person behind me was the last of the chain or the next in line to help continue the ripple, I will never know. What I do know is that it felt good to be part of that and it prompted me to think.

Reflecting upon this today, I realized how powerful that was. It took one individual with a positive intension. That intension was set into action. That action evolved to create an impact beyond the individual it was intended for, affecting a greater whole which created a difference in the lives of 7 others people, maybe more. Imagine the impact if that was a coordinated effort across all Starbucks drive-thru's one day. What affect would that have on a small town? A city? A nation? A world? .......... and that was just a cup of coffee.

With that, I encourage you to think about your day and think about whether there is something random that you can do today in your community or for someone to pay it forward with a random act of kindness to help make the world a brighter place.
