Social fitness is getting together with a friend (or friends) to engage in some form of physical activity together. You are getting social and active at the same time! Perhaps you try a new yoga class, go for a walk in the park, or even coordinate a group game of sand volleyball. In a sense, it is the new happy hour.
Think about it. Exercising and socializing perk you up, while excessively drinking weighs you down. We are better off meeting friends for a little social fitness than the typical happy hour of drinks and never-ending chips. And, if we still want that glass of wine or beer later we can have it at home with dinner. Win- win!
With so many new fitness trends and studios popping up everywhere, planning a social fitness outing can also introduce you and your friends to new workouts. Have you been wanting to try that new barre or spin class? Trying it out with a friend will make you more comfortable and help you avoid skipping out. When we have an exercise appointment with a friend, we are less likely to cancel.
Not everyone is into the whole group fitness at a studio scene. No worries, social fitness can still apply to you. Meeting up for a game of golf, hitting up the batting cages, walking around a mall, or participating in intramural sports all work too. The possibilities are endless!
Since Spring brings beautiful weather here, I am going to set a goal of planning a social fitness hour outdoors soon with a friend or two. I encourage you to do the same. Get creative and trade in a happy hour for social fitness hour this month!
